People ask this a lot. The honest answer is: two days is the minimum, three is comfortable, and five is when you stop being a tourist and start feeling like you live here. Here's how to think about it.
If You Have 2 Days
You can cover the essentials. Day one: Baščaršija, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, Ferhadija Street, the Latin Bridge. Day two: Žuta Tabija at sunset, Gallery 11/07/95, and the War Childhood Museum. You'll leave with a real sense of the city. It's tight but doable.
If You Have 3 Days
This is the sweet spot. Add the Trebević cable car and the old Olympic bobsled track on day three. Eat ćevapi for lunch two days in a row (no one will judge you). Sit longer at a café in Baščaršija. Walk somewhere without a plan. Sarajevo rewards that.
If You Have 4-5 Days
Now you're getting into day trip territory. Mostar is 2 hours south - one of the most beautiful towns in Europe. Travnik is an easy half-day. The Tunnel of Hope (Tunnel of Salvation) is just 20 minutes from the old town and worth every minute. With 5 days you start to actually know the city.
What Most Visitors Regret
Underestimating the city. Sarajevo is not a one-afternoon stop. The history is dense, the food takes time to enjoy properly, and the people are genuinely warm in a way that slows you down (in the best way). Most visitors who come for 2 days wish they'd stayed for 4. Still working out why Sarajevo is worth the trip? Start here.
When to Visit
April-May and September-October are the best months - mild weather, fewer crowds, beautiful light. July and August are busy and can be hot. Winter is atmospheric (especially if there's snow on the hills) but some attractions have reduced hours.
Whatever amount of time you have, SoulHaus puts you in the middle of everything. You can walk to most of what matters.
